A Thought From Rabbi Yisroel

picture of self3.jpg

Dear Friend,

We absolutely love our new neighborhood but have quickly learned there can be lots of traffic around Chapel Hill Rd/Morrisville Carpenter during rush hour. (We're still learning the best ways to get to 540 during those hours.)

One day this week it was particularly bad. Standstill.

Yet, I found myself perfectly at ease despite not moving much for close to 15 minutes. Actually, I was almost hoping the traffic would last longer.

What was it? Did I recite the serenity prayer that morning?

Not at all.  I was listening to a fantastic Torah lecture and didn’t want it to end.

-----

In the Parsha this week, we recap the journeys of the Jewish People while in the desert. When we think of that time in the desert, we often imagine spending years traipsing aimlessly around the desert in desperate need of a GPS. In actuality, that wasn’t the case. They never were lost. They actually made only 42 journeys during the entire period, the majority taking place at the beginning or end of the 40 years.

Most importantly, however, the trips were not random. Each was meaningful. At each location, they learned new Torah and Mitzvot. Every stop, even those that led to mistakes, was part of the process of their growing into a free people. It was about the journey, not only the destination.

What message does this tell us?

In our lives too, we can instill meaning into our journeys, even those as routine as our daily commute to work or summertime drive to the beach. When we’re with family, we can use that time to connect with our loved ones. And for the many times we’re alone in the car, there is so much quality material to listen to while driving.

Our  website has thousands of classes and lectures on every imaginable topic in Torah and Judaism. They can be listened to from the website or downloaded to your phone or Mp3 player for free. You can also download the app for audio and video classes  here.  (And For more advanced classes, I recommend  the excellent app from theYeshiva.net)

Want to download a class with the practical laws of gossip? Click  here. Hear a moving lecture that will start your day with inspiration? Click  here. Learn a meditation for the Kaddish: That’s  here. Dive into the issue of free choice.  Here.  Understand the historical background to the Ten Lost Tribes? Get that  here.

I’ll be the first to say it takes effort. Not only to download the classes, but even as far as actually deciding to learn something in the car. On the way to work, it’s far easier to simply turn on the radio and listen to the news or a talk show rather than focus on a class. But once I get started, I’m very happy to have made the choice to utilize this time in a meaningful way, and frequently see the effect the inspiration has on the rest of the day…

This Shabbos, davening at 4104 Grace Park Drive begins at 9:30 am with Torah Reading and discussion at 10:30 am and a light lunch at around 12:30pm sponsored anonymously.

Good Shabbos,

Rabbi Yisroel and Rebbetzin Chana

Some Notes About our New Facility at 4104 Grace Park

  • It was exciting to use our space for the first time last Shabbos!  Additional work will continue in the coming weeks on furnishing the new location (including window shades) as well as creating a lounge area and a children's section full of fun toys.  While this is a temporary smaller space, we want it to be beautiful and comfortable!
  • Thank you to everyone who made a special donation in honor of the new space. If you would like to make a donation for the project, please click here.
  • Prayer Services, meetings, programs, and adult education will now take place at this beautiful temporary facility. Hebrew School will take place across the street at the Discovery School and larger holiday programs will take place at community centers.
  • As mentioned in our emails, this move is part of a broader plan to move to a permanent home.  We are currently looking into various possibilities and look forward to be able to share news about this in the near future! Please call Rabbi Yisroel at 919.651.9710 if you'd like to schedule a meeting and learn more about the project.
  • If coming to our place for the first time, just look for the the storefront with the (currently) large white empty sign.  There is parking in front of our location that is usually empty in the mornings. It can fill up later in the day (especially lunchtime & evening), but there are additional parking lots throughout Grace Park.  During evenings, the parking near the offices are much quieter than those near the restaurants and apartments.1.jpg
It Takes a Village!

Our team of volunteers continued this past week.  From cleaning the new facility to building bookshelves, a heartfelt thank you to the more than 50 people who have helped us over the last weeks.

Over the coming week, we'll need a few more volunteers to help with:

  • Moving chairs from Reedy Creek/Towerview to Grace Park
  • Bringing some old items to dump/donation center
  • Furniture Assembly at the new facility

Please email us at [email protected] if you are available to help with any of these. Thank you!

The Parshah In A Nutshell

Parshat Matot-Massei

Moses conveys the laws governing the annulment of vows to the heads of the tribes of Israel. War is waged against Midian for their role in plotting the moral destruction of Israel, and the Torah gives a detailed account of the war spoils and how they were allocated amongst the people, the warriors, the Levites and the high priest.

The tribes of Reuben and Gad (later joined by half of the tribe of Manasseh) ask for the lands east of the Jordan as their portion in the Promised Land, these being prime pastureland for their cattle. Moses is initially angered by the request, but subsequently agrees on the condition that they first join, and lead, in Israel’s conquest of the lands west of the Jordan.

The forty-two journeys and encampments of Israel are listed, from the Exodus to their encampment on the plains of Moab across the river from the land of Canaan. The boundaries of the Promised Land are given, and cities of refuge are designated as havens and places of exile for inadvertent murderers. The daughters of Tzelafchad marry within their own tribe of Manasseh, so that the estate which they inherit from their father should not pass to the province of another tribe.
