A Thought From Rabbi Yisroel

picture of self3.jpgDear Friend,

You know the types of people who always seem to be involved in a Mitzvah? What is their secret? How do they always manage to be of help even before others find out about the cause?

This week's Torah Portion describes the life of Avraham and Sara. It opens up with Avraham's recovering from surgery and literally running to invite passing travelers to his tent for lodging and meals.

So what did this first "Bed and Breakfast" operation look like?

The Talmud describes Avraham's tent with one unique feature. It had 4 doors, as opposed to the regular one-door-tent at the time.

Why the four doors? Avraham and Sara wanted to show anyone passing by that they are welcome and that they were waiting for them to drop by. The openings on each side also ensured they didn’t miss any travelers.

The message is powerful.

Most people are good-hearted and like to help another person when the opportunity comes their way. But Avraham and Sara's example goes one step further. We don't wait for a good deed to come our way or to be asked for help. Rather, like a business looking for new customers, we’re always on the lookout for "mitzvah opportunities." Our antennas are up, constantly picking up the signals all around us. As as the Amazon Echo puts it, We are always ready, connected, and fast.”

For them it was running to help strangers and making their home ultra guest- friendly. And, in addition, while the guests were eating and enjoying this exceptional hospitality, Avraham would speak to them about monotheism and gratitude to G-d.

For us, it might be inquiring after a friend who is going through a difficult time and offering them help or assistance, before they have to ask. Or perhaps pro-actively adopting a "senior friend" to keep them company once a week. Having uplifting Torah thoughts in your mind ready to share with others who could use some inspiration.  Or asking to sponsor the upcoming project at the Shul before an appeal even goes out.

Whatever the case, the message of the Parsha is clear: We are to train ourselves to be so “plugged in” to the needs of others and so spiritually sensitive to the yearning of our soul that Mitzvot constantly always seem to be falling into our laps.

At Chabad of Cary, a tent with four doors also means creating as many points of entry for Jews of all ages and background to engage with their Judaism.  While we all share that essential Jewish bond, there is not one type of entry point. What touches one person's Neshama and leads them on their Jewish journey may be different for someone else.

In the addition to our many programs and classes for adults and children, see below for a new monthly TEEN PROGRAM as well as Chabad's upcoming evening for young Jewish Adults at Bond Brothers, done in partnership with the Raleigh Tribe.

The Parshah In A Nutshell

Parshat Vayeira

G‑d reveals Himself to Abraham three days after the first Jew’s circumcision at age ninety-nine; but Abraham rushes off to prepare a meal for three guests who appear in the desert heat. One of the three—who are angels disguised as men—announces that, in exactly one year, the barren Sarah will give birth to a son. Sarah laughs.

Abraham pleads with G‑d to spare the wicked city of Sodom. Two of the three disguised angels arrive in the doomed city, where Abraham’s nephew Lot extends his hospitality to them and protects them from the evil intentions of a Sodomite mob. The two guests reveal that they have come to overturn the place, and to save Lot and his family. Lot’s wife turns into a pillar of salt when she disobeys the command not to look back at the burning city as they flee.

While taking shelter in a cave, Lot’s two daughters (believing that they and their father are the only ones left alive in the world) get their father drunk, lie with him and become pregnant. The two sons born from this incident father the nations of Moab and Ammon.

Abraham moves to Gerar, where the Philistine king Abimelech takes Sarah—who is presented as Abraham’s sister—to his palace. In a dream, G‑d warns Abimelech that he will die unless he returns the woman to her husband. Abraham explains that he feared he would be killed over the beautiful Sarah.

G‑d remembers His promise to Sarah, and gives her and Abraham a son, who is named Isaac (Yitzchak, meaning “will laugh”). Isaac is circumcised at the age of eight days; Abraham is one hundred years old, and Sarah ninety, at their child’s birth.

Hagar and Ishmael are banished from Abraham’s home and wander in the desert; G‑d hears the cry of the dying lad, and saves his life by showing his mother a well. Abimelech makes a treaty with Abraham at Beersheba, where Abraham gives him seven sheep as a sign of their truce.

G‑d tests Abraham’s devotion by commanding him to sacrifice Isaac on Mount Moriah (the Temple Mount) in Jerusalem. Isaac is bound and placed on the altar, and Abraham raises the knife to slaughter his son. A voice from heaven calls to stop him; a ram, caught in the undergrowth by its horns, is offered in Isaac’s place. Abraham receives the news of the birth of a daughter, Rebecca, to his nephew Bethuel.
