A Thought From Rabbi Yisroel

Two hundred years ago, there was a Chassidic Master known as Rabbi Moshe Leib of Sassov. His synagogue's elders were disturbed by conversations during services.
 

After a great deal of discussion, they established a new rule for the synagogue: "From now on, no more trivial talk in this holy place. You come to worship, to study or to celebrate – and you go home. This is not a chicken market!"

But a few weeks later, Rabbi Moshe Leib got up and declared: "I am hereby revoking the new rule." The elders were stunned. "Why, Rebbe?" "The shul is so much quieter, so it seems to be working!"

Reb Moshe Leib answered: "Before this rule, people would come to shul and they would hear who needs a job, who is sick, and who has a cause for celebration. They would open their hearts to others people's lives, and they would end by helping each other. Now people come to synagogue, do their spiritual thing, and leave. They come as individuals and they leave as individuals; we've lost the communal connection.'

The talking ban is lifted! Talk amongst yourselves -- and motivate each other to be of help to those who need it!"

The saintly Reb Moshe Leib didn't mean that people should, G-d forbid, disrupt the sanctity of prayer. He meant that a Jewish community is a place where people always think and care about each other. That's the way it's always been.

We all have individual journeys in life, and each journey is uniquely important. But part of that journey is creating connections with others. That's community.

During the High Holidays, as we focus on things like personal prayer and self-introspection, this is a story to keep in mind. Find out if there is anyone in the community who does not have a place to go for the High Holidays and invite them to Chabad of Cary. Welcome that person who just walked into synagogue. Extend a heartfelt Shana Tova and warm smile to someone who may be going through a hard time. The many interactions with others we have during this time of year present so many opportunities for Mitzvos.

Tomorrow morning, Davening at  4104 Grace Park Drive begins at 9:30 am with Torah Reading and discussion at 10:30 am, and a kiddush at around 12:30 pm. The Kiddush is sponsored by the Mike & Lisa Rosen in honor of Ben's birthday.

Yizkor Memorial Booklet Deadline this Tuesday

   This year in honor of Yom Kippur we are putting together a beautiful new easy-to-read Yizkor booklet. 

Yizkor means to remember.  For on our most holy days, we take a moment to reflect, remember, and connect with our loved ones. And we ask G‑d, too, to remember the souls of family and friends who have passed away.

And we pledge to do good in the merit of their souls. For this reason, the Yizkor service includes a pledge to tzedakah, charity, on behalf of the deceased’s souls.

Included in our new booklet will be the names of loved ones of our community members who have passed away to be remembered during Yizkor. Having all these names compiled in one booklet, as is customary in many communities, brings everyone together as one family and brings an added measure of merit to the souls of our loved ones.

You can submit a name to be added to the Yizkor booklet when signing up online for the High Holidays.  A contribution of $18 per name is suggested.

You can also simply email us the names  at info@chabadofcary.org and make a special Yizkor donation in their memory at this link.

During the High Holidays,  the Doors of Heaven are Open to all...  So are ours. 

Since our first year of High Holiday Services, everyone has been welcome to join us. Membership or tickets are not needed.  

Experience a welcoming atmosphere, joyous singing, uplifting insights, and clear explanations throughout the prayers.

Community Rosh Hashana Dinner

 

We are finalizing the food for our High Holiday kosher food and it would be helpful to know if you plan on joining our 

Rosh Hashana DINNER  BUFFET & L'CHAIM!

Following our short but powerful first night Services, all are invited to a Rosh Hashana Dinner! Wish each other a heartfelt Shanah Tovah over fine kosher wines, enjoy a delicious buffet including brisket and take part in the traditional foods eaten on Rosh Hashana Night.    There is also a children's program and kid-friendly food.

You can attend our Rosh Hashana dinner even if you will be elsewhere for the other High Holiday Services. There is a $20 suggested donation for dinner. (Dinner Sponsorships available on the $180 and $360 Levels)

Volunteers Needed this Holiday Season

We'd love your help with a Mitzvah for Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur!

An online signup sheet is now set up which lists the many volunteer opportunities. Your help during this busy season is greatly needed and appreciated

  • Moving Supplies to 111 Place:  We will need help bringing over books and other items to 111 Place before Rosh Hashana and back again after Yom Kippur. We will be setting up next Sunday morning. If you are available to help during that time please let us know by filling out the signup firn which will connect you with Eric Danziger who will be coordinating the logistics for the High Holidays. 
  • Greeters:  Chabad of Cary is a warm and inviting community. During the High Holidays, when many new faces come to daven with us, we need your help in making sure everyone is greeted with a warm smile and machzor.   
  • Food Preparation: This year we will have both a community Rosh Hashana Dinner as well as a breakfast after Yom Kippur.  We still need a few more hands setting up, serving, and cleaning up!     
  • Sukkah Build: Help build our Sukkah! A fun and important Mitzvah.
  • Jewish Cultural Festival: On the last day of Sukkot, the town of Cary will be having a Sukkot Festival. We need volunteers to run our kosher food stand as well as a Chabad of Cary information table.

75 Attend Chabad of Cary Youth Programming On Sunday!
  • New Staff: Chabad of Cary is excited to welcome Morah Chaya Fellig to our Hebrew School Staff and Rabbi Zalman and Mushka Dubinsky to our CTEEN Staff. 
  • Our Largest Year This past Sunday approximately 75 students BH participated in our Youth Programming between our Hebrew School and new monthly CTEEN program!  We are very proud of our growth, thankful for our dedicated staff and volunteers, and looking forward to continued growth.
     
  • New Families: We're excited to welcome many more new families to the Chabad of Cary Hebrew School including the Burbea, Cohen, Dekalo, Dickson, Henschel, Kelley, Lustig, Mandel, Martin, Shnaidman, and Wood Families.   We're excited to have you as part of our growing community and looking forward to spending meaningful and joyous times together...

Most people, even the devout, struggle with beliefs about G-d. It is easy, for example, to affirm the basic tenets of Judaism during a prayer service, but when it comes to trusting G-d with our daily decisions, many share a secret, painful fear that G-d isn’t really looking out for them.

Many of us have been brought up under the assumption that mainstream science is incompatible with our Jewish faith. Wrestling with Faith was created to tackle questions like these—the “big issues” that keep people from an intimate relationship with G-d. The course acknowledges the often unspoken doubts and fears that all people share, and seizes their invitation for us to dig deeper for the answers.

Jewish Educational Loan Fund (JELF)- Raleigh-Cary Jewish Family Services is the local administrator of the JELF loan. JELF grants interest-free loans to Jewish students from Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia for post-secondary study at accredited institutions. JELF’s Loans are “last dollar” — they supply the final funds that a student needs to attend school. These loans can be used for study at a college or university, graduate school or professional/vocational school that leads to a degree or certificate. Volunteers Needed: Help JFS serve southern Wake County isolated seniors through our Friendly Visitor program! Friendly Visitor volunteers are paired up with a local senior for weekly social visits. These visits are typically 45 minutes to an hour and foster a connection to their Jewish community while playing games, reading, or simply chatting. This is a great family mitzvah opportunity as well! To learn more about the JFS Friendly Visiting program, or to volunteer, click HERE.  

 

JFS Family Connections: Prioritizing Play, Encouraging Creativity: Thursday, September 20, 2018, 7:00 PM  8:30 PM, Temple Beth Or, 5315 Creedmoor Road Raleigh, NC, 27612. In this workshop, join other parents and JFS Therapist, Veronica Kemeny, MSW, LCSW, as we discuss the benefits of play and how to encourage unstructured play for your children of all ages. The scientific support for play and the importance it holds in child development will be reviewed. Concrete ways to encourage play for different ages will also be provided. JFS Senior Connections: Understanding Your Medicare Options: Wednesday, September 26, 2018, 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM, Raleigh-Cary Jewish Community Center, 12804 Norwood Road, Raleigh, NC, 27613. OPEN ENROLLMENT begins on October 15th for Medicare plans including Part D.
