Chabad of Cary - Jerusalem Torah Scroll Project

 We are excited to announce that Chabad of Cary will now be getting our own Torah Scroll.  Our first Sefer Torah has a rich history behind it.  -- for nearly 100 years old, it has been been in our Holy City, Jerusalem.  In the last few decades, however, it has not been used regularly.  A family in the  community (who wishes to remain anonymous), bought the Torah and has generously donated this historic Torah to Chabad of Cary.  The Torah will be dedicated to in memory of the 6 million Jewish Victims of the Holocaust.

 

TorahOur new Torah Scroll will allow us to have two Torah Scrolls for use on holidays and other special occasions on which we read from two different portions.  Until now, we have always had to roll back and forth in the middle of the service.

 

The "Jerusalem Torah Scroll" will require some basic work from a sofer until it will be  "kosher" to be used for readings. The restoration will include filling in letters that have become rubbed off over time and resewing many sections of the parchment. We will also be purchasing new Atzei Chaim (wooden rollers) and a Torah Mantel (Torah cover).

 

Participating in the writing or restoring of a Torah is the last of the 613 commandments in the Torah (see below). Please take part in this special Mitzvah and help us reach our goal of raising $2500 for the Torah's restoration by endowing one or several Torah portions.    

We look forward to finishing this project in time for a special Shabbos on May 25th in which we will use the Torah for the very first time and have a special kiddush following services.
